One of the biggest misconceptions about drinking water is that it’s either “clean” or “contaminated.” In reality, water quality isn’t that simple. Almost every water source contains something beside pure water. Some substances are naturally occuring minerals picked upl as groundwater moves through rock and soil. Others are intentionally addded during the treatment process to make water safe to drink. Some may enter the water as it travels through underground pipes before it reaches your home. 

 

The important thing to understand is this: 

Not everything found in your water is harmful, but understanding what’s in your water can help you protect your plumbing, improve water quality, and make informed decisions about treatment.

Not Everything In Your Water Is A Contaminant

Before we talk about specific water quality concerns, it’s important to understand a distinction that often get lost online. Homeowners frequently use the word “contaminant” to describe anything that’s found in drinking water. However, from a water quality perspective, there are several different categories. 

 

Naturally Occurring Minerals

These include calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese that dissolve into groundwater naturally. These minerals are responsible for problems like hard water and staining, but they’re very different from industrial chemicals or bacteria.

 

Water Treatment Chemicals

Municipal water suppliers intentionally addd disinfectants like chlorine or chloramine to destroy harmful microorganisms and keep drinking water safe as it travels through the distribution system.

Without these disinfectants, water could become contaminated before it reached your faucet.

 

Sediment

Tiny particles of sand, rust, dirt, or pipe scale may enter your home’s plumbing from aging infrastructure, well systems, or plumbing repairs.  These particles are usually more of a plumbing concern than a health concern.

 

Environmental Contaminants

Substances such as PFAS, nitrates, pesticides, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may be present in certain water supplies depending on local environmental conditions. These are contaminants that often make national headlines.

 

Plumbing-Related Contaminants

Sometimes the water leaving the treatment plant isn’t the problem at all. Lead, copper, and other metals often enter drinking water after it leaves the utility, typically from older plumbing materials inside service lines or homes. Understanding the source of a water quality issue is the first step toward choosing the right solution.

Why Your Neighbor's Water May Be Different Than Yours

One question our plumbers hear surprisingly often is:

“If my city treats everyone’s water the same, why does my neighbor’s water taste different?”

 

It’s a great question, and the answer illustrates why there is no one size fits all water treatment system. Several factors influence the water coming out of your faucet, including:

  • The age of your home’s plumbing
  • The materials used in your service line
  • Whether your neighborhood as older water mains
  • Seasonal maintenance performed by your local utility
  • Your home’s water heater
  • Whether your home is supplied by a municipal system or a private well
  • The natural geology beneath your property

We’ve visited neighboring homes with completely different water quality concerns simply because one home had aging galvanized plumbing while the other had newer copper or PEX piping.

Hard Water Minerals: The Most Common Water Quality Issue We See

If we had to name a single most common water issue we encounter throughout the Dayton area, hard water would easily be at the top of the list. Hard water develops naturally as groundwater travels through limestone and other mineral rich rock formations. Along the way, it dissolves calcium and magnesium before eventually entering your home’s plumbing system.

 

These minerals aren’t generally considered harmful to drink. In fact, calcium and magnesium are naturally occurring minerals found in many foods. The problem with hard water isn’t your health. The problem occurs in your plumbing. Over time, these dissolved minerals begin forming scale inside water heaters, plumbing pipes, dishwashers, coffee makers, ice makers, and washing machines. At first, homeowners usually notice cosmetic issues:

  • white spots on dishes
  • soap scum on shower doors
  • mineral buildup around faucets

But behind the walls, the same minerals are quietly coating the inside of your plumbing system.  In fact, one of the most common things our plumbers find during water heater replacements is heavy mineral scale inside the tank. Many homeowners assume the water heater simply “wore out”, when in reality, years of hard water buildup forced the system to work much harder than it was designed to. That’s one reason water softeners often pay for themselves over time by helping protect expensive plumbing equipment.

Chlorine: Why Your Water Sometimes Smells Like a Swimming Pool

 

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that chlorine is intentionally added to drinking water. Without it, municipal water systems would be much more vulnerable to bacteria, viruses, annd other harmful microorganisms as water travels through miles of underground pipes.  

In other words, chlorine serves an important purpose. However, the amount needed to disinfect water can also affect its taste and smell.  Some people notice chlorine immediately, others hardly notice it at all. Because chlorine is added during treatment, not naturally occuring, a properly designed activated carbon filtration system can significantly reduce chlorine taste and odor throughout the home. 

Lead: The Water Utility May Not Be The Problem

 

Lead is one of the most misunderstood drinking water concerns. Many homeowners assume lead originates at the water treatment plant. In reality, lead is far more likely to enter drinking water after it leaves the utility. Older service lines, lead solder, aging plumbing components, and certain brass fixtures can all contribute to small amounts of lead as water travels into the home.

This is one reason two homes on the same streat can have different water quality results. If your home was built before modern plumbing regulations, or if you’re unsure about the materials in your plumbing system, water testing can help determine whether additional treatment is appropriate.

 

PFAS: Why Everyone Is Talking About “Forever Chemicals”

 

Over the last several years, PFAS have become one of the most discussed topics in drinking water. PFAS stand for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals used in manufacturing since 1940s. They’re found in products such as non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing- food packaging, firefighting foam, and industrial manufacturing processes. Unlike many chemicals, PFAS break down extremely slowly in the environment, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals”. 

Research into their long-term health effects continues, and federal drinking water regulations continue to evolve. The important thing for homeowners to remember is this: not every water supply contains elevated levels of PFAS. Testing, not headlines, is the best way to understand your home’s water quality.

 

Iron and Manganese: More Than Just Rust Stains

 

If your sink develops orange stains or your laundry comes out with brown discolorations, iron may be present in your water. Iron occurs naturally in many groundwater supplies throughout Ohio and is especially common in private wells. Manganese often accompanies iron but leaves black or dark brown staining instead. 

Although these minerals rarely pose a significant health concern at residential levels, they can create constant cleaning challenges and shorten the lifespan of plumbing fixtures.  Many homeowners assume stained sinks need replacing. More often than not, the real problem is the water, not the fixture.

 

Sulfur: Why Water Sometimes Smells Like Rotten Eggs

Few water problems are as noticeable as sulfur odors. If your hot water smells like rotten eggs, several things could be happening. Hydrogen sulfide gas naturally occurs in some groundwater. Sulfur bacteria may be present in certain wells. In other cases, the odor originates inside the water heater itself, where bacteria interact with the magnesium anode rod. 

Because several different issues can create the same smell, accurate diagnosis is essential before recommending treatment. That’s another reason we avoid recommending equipment before understanding the source of the problem.

 

Sediment: The Hidden Threat to Your Plumbing

 

Unlike dissolved minerals, sediment consists of tiny physical particles carried by the water. These particles include: 

  • Sand
  • Rust
  • Dirt
  • Silt
  • Pipe Scale

While they often go unnoticed, sediment gradually wears down valves, clogs faucet aerators, damages appliance components, and reduces plumbing efficiency. 

After municipal water main repairs, homeowners sometimes notice temporary discoloration. That’s often sediment being stirred up within the distribution system, not necessarily an indication that the water is unsafe. A properly sized sediment filter protects your plumbing by capturing these particles before they circulate throughout your home.

 

Nitrates, VOCs, and Other Environmental Contaminants

 

Private well owners often ask about contaminants that aren’t visible, don’t affect taste, and don’t leave stains. These include substances such as nitrates, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, and certain industrial chemicals. Unlike hard water or iron, these contaminants generally can’t be identified by appearance alone. Testing is the only reliable way to know whether they’re present. 

Depending on the results, advanced filtration technologies such as reverse osmosis or specialty treatment systems may be recommended.

 

The Biggest Mistake We See Homeowners Make

We’ve met homeowners who purchased expensive water softeners hoping to improve the taste of their drinking water, when what they really wanted was chlorine reduction.

 

We’ve also seen homeowners install countertop filters expecting them to eliminate hard water, only to discover that white mineral spots and scale buildup continued throughout the rest of the house.
